The most important symptom of the temporomandibular joint
dysfunction is a TMJ headache. In fact the headache suffered by
the TMJ patients can be really painful at times and can also
lead to facial inflammation. The headache might further lead to
chronic tension, ear pain and ringing which can become as
serious as losing one’s hearing abilities.
The TMJ patients mostly experience a TMJ headache on both
the sides of the head and also over the temples. It is
generally believed to be muscular in origin. Female patients
experience the worst of pain during the time of menstruation
and other emotional and physical stress. Some they even confuse
it with that of migraine as the pain occurs almost in the same
area. Most of the TMJ doctors or the physicians are known to
misdiagnose the headache problem and they are often seen to
prescribe medicines. The TMJ headache is often known to last
for some days and in some cases stretches up to some months
even. This gradually makes the patient undergo fatigue and
eventually they tend to loose their sleep as well. Furthermore
the chronic tension can make the patients lead a very stressful
personal and professional life as they cannot deliver according
to the standards expected out of them. The headaches are most
often seen to stay for a long time and they do not disappear on
their own. There are some experts who have even concluded that
the headaches might even occur at the same time with the sinus
problems or that of nose congestion problems that the TMJ
patient might be suffering from a long time.
If you TMJ doctor is not at all familiar with these symptoms
of TMJ they may misdiagnose it saying that it is as common as
sinus or migraine pain. So make sure that you go for a
treatment from a doctor who is very much experienced with TMJ
symptoms as they will be the ones to suggest the right
treatment and take proper care of you. However there is no need
of anxiety as TMJ headache can be treated in an efficient
manner, so that it stops bothering you. If you know the
symptoms well, you probably will be able to take the prescribed
medication for your TMJ headache and thus treat yourself,
without the assistance of a TMJ doctor all the time. You also
need to make a note of your mental condition and then stress on
the factors which are deteriorating your condition. Consult a
TMJ specialist to get rid of the problems as soon as
possible.
